Nuts About Coconuts: The Benefits of Coconut Oil and Why You Should be Using It!

You've probably heard a lot of buzz about coconut oil recently, but may not know why it is so good.  Here, we’ve compiled some of the facts about coconut oil and why we love it!  In fact, we include coconut oil as the addition to our Bliss Ball mix and as a vegan option for our Cookie mix.

Coconuts have been nourishing people around the world for generations, as they are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals.  Coconuts are classified as a functional food, providing many health benefits above the nutritional content.  Coconut oil is so versatile; you should definitely get some, start using it straight away and reap the benefits!

Not just a trendy fad, coconut oil is by far the healthiest oil you can use and has been used widely in Asian and Pacific medicine for hundreds of years.  Pacific Islanders call coconut palms the ‘Tree of Life’ and believe coconut oil cures all illnesses.  While it may not strictly be true, it does possess many health giving properties.  It does also contain a high level of saturated fats but it has been proven that these are the ‘good’ fats and not the ones we want to avoid.

Here are just some of the benefits of using coconut oil:

  • Anti-viral
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-fungal
  • Nutritional source of energy
  • Improves digestion and absorption of other nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids)
  • Helps protect against osteoporosis
  • Supports immune system function
  • Softens skin and prevents wrinkles
  • Promotes healthy hair and reduces dandruff

There are many, many more - if you’d like to explore this further, see www.coconutresearchcenter.org.

You may be thinking ‘sure, coconut oil provides so many benefits but how do I use it?’  Here’s just a few ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your life:

  1. Add it to smoothies – add a tablespoon to a smoothie to increase its nutritional content
  2. Use it for frying – it has a high smoke point and can tolerate higher temperatures than other oils before its properties are atered
  3. In baking – it can replace butter in baking
  4. Add it to breakfast food (cereals, oats, muesli etc) – to increase intake of good fats
  5. On the skin – slather it directly onto your face at night and wake up with soft, supple skin
  6. On baby’s bottom – its properties help soothe and prevent nappy rash
  7. As a natural eye makeup remover
